Long awaited, Korean drama 'Island' will premiere in December

On October 6th, TVING announced that the upcoming drama "Island Season 1" starring Kim Nam Gil, Lee Da Hee, ASTRO's Cha Eun Woo, and Sung Joon will be released this December. It will be available on TVING and Amazon Prime Video.

Had been reported two years ago and delayed for almost a year, the Korean drama Island is finally scheduled to air at the end of this year with a slot in December. This fantasy action drama set on Jeju island is an adaptation of the webtoon of the same name, which tells the story of three people who fight against evil by trying to destroy the world.

Set on Jeju Island, the series will touch on the legends and folklore of a famous tourist destination, where viewers can enjoy its natural beauty.

Produced by YLab Flex, Studio Dragon, and Gilstory Ent, "Island" features one of the best front and back teams, including director Bae Jong ("Welcome to Dongmakgol", "Fabricated City"), writer Oh Bo-hyin, and well-known cast, including Kim Nam Gil, Lee Da Hee, Cha Eun Woo, and Sung Joon.

More detail about his character, Kim Nam-gil will cast Pan who is a character who faces crime in preparation for the end of the world. Unfortunately, his life cannot exist with humans because he has the curse of eternal life and the difficulty of adjusting.

Lee Da-hee cast Won Mi-ho, the third-generation daughter of a conglomerate who is not aware of her destiny. This is when she was sent by her father to relocate to Jeju Island alone as a teacher after a big mistake. There where she is targeted by evils.

Cha Eun-woo cast John, an exorcist and trendy Catholic priest who has a calling to protect humans and cleanse evil. However, his figure is known to have an unfavorable past despite growing up in the United States and watching Korean dramas.

Lastly, Sung Joon will play the role of Goong Tan who takes care of Pan to protect him from evil. However, he eventually begins to fight Pan and creates tension in the story after an accidental incident.

Comic Island has been published since 1997 by Yoo In-wan and Yang Kyung-il, got successful when they were released. Then, this comic debuted online on Naver Webtoon in 2016 with no less popularity among comic fans at the time.

Meanwhile, the Island project has been rumored since 2020 with news about actress Seo Ye-Ji getting an offer as the female lead for the project. At that time, this drama was still being worked on by OCN television and she had a positive review and finally accepted this offer.

Cha Eun-woo then got an offer for this project along with Kim Nam-Gil. Both of them reviewed the project positively and finally joined in confirming his appearance in March 2021.

Only a month after the confirmation of the role, the romantic relationship scandal that befell Seo Ye-Ji at that time went viral in the mass media. Because of this, she finally withdrew from the project as stated by the GOLDMEDALIST agency in May 2021.

A few weeks later, Lee Da-hee was then pulled into this project citing the suitability of the role and appreciation of the concern regarding the quality of production applied in Island. Although this news is a bright spot for Island which is experiencing production delays due to the casting process, the production schedule is still at risk of delays.

As of now, Island is thought to have completed filming and is in the final stages of production although it has not announced detailed dates for domestic and global broadcasts.

Many have been waiting for the premiere of the drama and how it will adapt the story of the popular webtoon as well the chemistry of the main leads.

For the first season, the drama will reportedly have 20 episodes. Meanwhile, a second season is already confirmed but the airing date is not yet finalized.
