SYNOPSIS

Queen Won Gyeong, born into a prestigious family of high officials during the Goryeo era, was a woman of extraordinary ambition and resilience. Hailing from a high-ranking official family, her lineage afforded her both prestige and influence, qualities that would shape her life in the tumultuous transition from Goryeo to Joseon. She married Yi Bang Won, later known as Prince Jeong An, the brilliant and determined fifth son of King Tae Jo, the founder of the Joseon dynasty. Their union was more than a marriage—it was a partnership rooted in shared ambition and political acumen.

When King Tae Jo unexpectedly named his second son, Yi Bang Gwa, as the crown prince and heir to the throne, Lady Min and her husband were devastated. Yi Bang Won, a proven strategist and key architect of his father’s rise to power, felt sidelined and betrayed. Refusing to accept this decision, Lady Min became her husband's closest confidant and co-conspirator. Together, they orchestrated a series of calculated moves to secure Yi Bang Won’s path to the throne. Their plans were relentless, fueled by a desire to reclaim what they believed was rightfully theirs.

Their efforts bore fruit when Yi Bang Won ascended the throne as King Tae Jong, ushering in an era marked by both consolidation of power and internal strife. Lady Min, now Queen Won Gyeong, believed her position as queen would strengthen her influence. However, life as a queen was far from the success she had dreamed of. King Tae Jong, pragmatic and driven by a desire to secure his dynasty, took multiple concubines to expand his alliances and produce heirs. Each new concubine was a reminder of her diminishing control and authority within the palace.

The increasing tension between King Tae Jong and Queen Won Gyeong became a defining aspect of their reign. As the king's attention shifted to his political and personal affairs, Queen Won Gyeong found herself increasingly isolated. Her strong partnership with Yi Bang Won turned into a power struggle, with both seeking to assert dominance over the other. For the queen, the stakes were personal—her dignity, her family’s standing, and her legacy. For the king, it was about unifying power and ensuring the stability of his reign, even if it meant undermining his queen.

King Tae Jong’s attempts to control Queen Won Gyeong and her influential Min clan only deepened the rift between them. He sought to control the power of her family, fearing their prominence could threaten his authority. This struggle for control fueled an emotionally charged and politically fraught dynamic between the king and queen, a relationship defined by love, betrayal, ambition, and the brutal realities of maintaining power in a nascent dynasty.

Queen Won Gyeong's story is one of resilience and determination in the face of changing fortunes. As she navigated the treacherous world of court politics, she emerged as a complex figure—an ambitious woman, a loving but embattled wife, and a queen who fought hard to protect her family and her place in history. Her life is a poignant reflection of the sacrifices and struggles endured by those who lived at the heart of power, where loyalty and betrayal were two sides of the same coin.
